Partnerships Advance the Expansion of a Hartford Gem

HARTFORD – November 20, 2025 – The Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) is best known for creating housing in Hartford through the redevelopment of dormant property; however, addressing community assets is also a focus for CRDA.

Real Art Ways (RAW) has been a cultural haven in Hartford since 1975. Founded for and by artists of every medium, it shares and cultivates the gifts of established and emerging artisans.

In 1989, RAW moved from its longtime location at 197 Asylum Street in downtown Hartford to 56 Arbor Street in the Parkville neighborhood, and in 2021, purchased the adjoining empty warehouse to accommodate growth in programming and operations. Capital fundraising efforts raised significant backing from public and private donors. With construction drawings complete, the project is ready to move forward. CRDA has provided up to $4 million in a bridge loan so the $24 million renovations can begin. A press event was held to mark the achievement.

RAW’s creativity was on full display as CRDA Executive Director David Steuber, Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Speaker Matt Ritter, and Hartford Mayor Arulampalam joined the organization’s leadership in shoveling popcorn rather than dirt during the groundbreaking ceremony. The 8,000-square-foot addition will house a cafe, a theater, a dedicated live arts space, a box office, concessions, and new restrooms. Renovations to the existing facility include a new roof, an elevator, upgrades to the current theater, two additional theaters, and enhanced art galleries.

The Capital Region Development Authority has made significant investments in the Parkville area, providing a $3.5 million loan to help create Parkville Market. CRDA is also working with developers to convert other commercial properties in the neighborhood into apartments. The RAW project is an excellent example of what can happen through a public, private, and community partnership.
