The prominent presence of the iconic onion-shaped dome of the Colt Armory once epitomized the robust manufacturing history of Hartford. No longer the foundry where the world famous revolvers are made, the complex has been transformed into a place to live, work and enjoy.

Colt North Armory Apartments are the latest building within the 130 acre property to be renovated. The 48 loft-style studio, one and two-bedroom units add to the 129 existing in the South Armory that opened in 2015. The Capital Region Development Authority, (CRDA) supported the $13.6 million renovation with a $2.8 million loan to developer, CG Management Company. In addition to CRDA’s loan, public funds invested in the project include $3.4 million in federal historic tax credits and a $1.5 million brownfields loan. Rents range from $1,250 for a studio to $1,850 for a two bedroom-two bath unit.

Colt Gateway is part of the larger 260 acre Coltsville, which has been designated a National Historical Park by the U.S. National Park Service. Any changes to structures on the site must be made to NPS standards. The new apartments maintain the large windows, wood ceiling beams and support columns original to the factory.

Colt Gateway is a mixture of residential and commercial entities. Thomas Hooker Brewery and Tom & Sam’s Café occupy the street level of the South Armory, while JCJ Architects and Foley Carrier Services lease upper floors. It is located just blocks away from another CRDA project, the newly-renovated Dillon Stadium, home of the USL Hartford Athletics Soccer Team, as well as a quick walk from the Connecticut Convention Center, Marriott Downtown Hartford Hotel, the UConn-Hartford campus and the Front Street entertainment district.
