In 2018, CRDA and the Northside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance (NINA) created a Heritage Home Program funded with a $2.5 million award from the State Bond Commission. So far, the partnership has facilitated the creation of eight housing properties for ownership or rental opportunities for Hartford residents. The restoration of a historic home in Hartford’s Asylum Hill neighborhood is one of two projects in Phase III of the CRDA-NINA Heritage Homes Initiative.
Built in the 1890s, the three-story single-family structure was damaged by a fire in March 2020. It stood charred and unoccupied until the completion of its recent rehabilitation in late September of 2023. It has three bedrooms, two full and one-half baths, a basement, and an unfinished third-floor attic space. It sold for $350,000 just days after being on the market in October of 2023. The CRDA provided a $50,000 construction loan to be paid back by the proceeds of the state historic tax credits, and a $100,000 grant to write down the costs of the construction to price levels affordable for neighborhood homebuyers and consistent with the appraised value for the property.
